Thursday Aerobic Runs

A significant component of the District #39 Physical Education program is aerobic fitness development. While most days activities promote cardiovascular endurance, Thursdays are specifically designed to focus on developing the students aerobic fitness level. A specific day has been selected to allow students to prepare properly for this activity by bringing needed inhalers and or braces. We instruct students on proper diet and proper running form in preparing for the run. Weather permitting, students generally have an option of participating in either the Mile Run or the 20 Minute Jog. Students who miss run will be expected to make up those runs. To help promote running and provide opportunities for students to earn additional points, two extra credit runs are offered each quarter. Obviously, weather conditions will dictate whether the run is an indoor activity or an outdoor activity.

20 Minute Jog
The majority of the time, classes will run a sustained jog for 20 minutes. This activity is part of the curriculum design to help students achieve one of the Illinois state goals.

In the 20 minute run, students are graded on how long they can sustain a continuous jog. A student earns the percentage of points equal to the percentage of time the student actually ran. For example, if a student stops jogging at the 10 minute mark of a 20 minute run, that student would earn half of the 10 points possible for each run. In the last three years, 98% of the students have been able to achieve the goal of sustained running for 20 minutes.
 
Mile Run
Another department goal is to help students develop and achieve individual goal times for the mile run. Students must run a mile as a baseline early in the school year. We developed a database that calculates an individual mile goal time for each student. If students achieve their goal, another goal time is created.

Set goals based on fitness data and develop, implement, and monitor an individual fitness plan. The student with teacher guidance will determine a specific goal for aerobic endurance run. 80% of students will be able to achieve their goal
A highly efficient runner who runs the mile in the 6 minute area may need to improve 4 seconds. A less efficient runner who runs a 12 minute mile may need to improve 30 seconds.
Grading for the mile run is a combination of two factors. One factor is Goal Points, or how much of their goal was achieved. Students receive one point for each 10% of their individual goal they are able to achieve. The other factor is Speed Points, or how fast the student actually ran the mile. Speed Points equal 22 minus the student’s time in minutes. These two factors are employed to encourage slower runners who achieve their goals and encourage faster runners who may not reach their goals as easily. The two factors are averaged to determine the number of points a student earned for that run. Therefore both the Goal Points and the Speed Points are important in earning the final total mile run points. It is unlikely that students can gain by intentionally running slowly for the first run. Some examples are given below to illustrate how students earn points in the mile run.
